This set of images is my response to an environmental conflict on the Norfolk Coast which exposes the impact of climate change. The Bacton Gas Terminal, which produces one third of the UK’s gas needs, lies perilously close to a rapidly eroding cliffline. The erosion is caused by rising sea level and increased storminess, which are of course due to climate warming. We have the huge irony of a major fossil fuel installation threatened by the effects of burning fossil fuels!
In my images of the coastal defences I wanted to convey a sense of chaos and desperation, perhaps even futility, in attempting to defend the coast against a threat that will only increase in frequency, power and impact.
I was invited to write an article on this issue for the Royal Photographic Society Creative Eye magazine, which you can read on pp20-23 of the May 2024 issue.
